A pulpotomy is one of the most effective ways to save a baby tooth affected by deep decay or infection. By removing only the infected portion of the tooth’s pulp and sealing it, we can relieve pain, preserve the natural tooth structure, and prevent the need for extraction.
At Big Apple Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Henry Martinez provides gentle, child-focused pulpotomy treatment to keep your child’s smile healthy and comfortable. Call us at (480) 861-5958 to schedule an appointment.
A pulpotomy, sometimes called a “baby root canal,” removes infected or inflamed tissue from the top portion of the tooth’s pulp chamber. The healthy root structure remains intact.
After cleaning the infected area, a medicated material is placed to soothe and preserve the remaining healthy pulp. The tooth is then restored with a crown to protect it until it naturally falls out.

Deep Tooth Decay
When a cavity reaches the nerve of the tooth, a filling alone is not enough. A pulpotomy removes the infected tissue while preserving the remaining tooth.
Tooth Pain or Sensitivity
Persistent pain, especially from hot or cold foods, may indicate pulp irritation. A pulpotomy removes the source of discomfort.
Preventing Early Tooth Loss
Baby teeth play an important role in guiding permanent teeth. Saving them helps avoid alignment, spacing, and chewing issues.
Most pulpotomies can be completed in a single visit. The steps typically include:
1) Numbing and Cleaning – The tooth is numbed, and all decay is removed.
2) Removing Infected Pulp – Only the inflamed or infected portion of the pulp chamber is taken out.
3) Placing Medication – A soothing, biocompatible material is placed to protect the remaining pulp.
4) Crown Placement – The tooth is restored with a stainless steel or white zirconia crown for full coverage and long-term protection.

- Relief from pain caused by decay or infection
- Preservation of natural baby teeth
- Prevention of early tooth loss and future orthodontic issues
- A quick, comfortable procedure for children
- Long-term protection when paired with a durable crown}
After a pulpotomy, the tooth must be protected with a full-coverage crown. We offer:
Sprig White Zirconia Crowns
- Tooth-colored, natural appearance
- Metal-free and biocompatible
- Extremely durable and stain-resistant
- Ideal for front teeth or for families preferring an aesthetic option
Stainless Steel Crowns
- Highly durable and cost-effective
- Often used on back teeth
- Can sometimes be placed using the minimally invasive Hall Technique
- Excellent protection for baby molars

A tooth treated with a pulpotomy will usually last until it naturally falls out. Baby molars typically remain in the mouth until ages 10–12, making it important to preserve them when possible.
When paired with a well-fitting crown, pulpotomies offer long-lasting, reliable results.
Mild Sensitivity
Your child may experience light soreness for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medication can help if needed.
Pain That Isn’t Normal
Sharp, persistent pain, swelling, or discomfort that worsens could indicate complications. Contact our office promptly if this occurs.

If your child is experiencing tooth pain or has been diagnosed with a deep cavity, a pulpotomy may be the best way to save their tooth and protect their oral health.
